The weight of one square metre of paper says a lot about its strength and use.

What is grammage (g/m²) and why does it matter for packaging?

Grammage is the weight of one square metre of paper in grams, written as g/m². For example, one square metre of 150 g/m² paper weighs 150 grams.

What grammage affects

  • Strength — higher grammage usually means stronger, stiffer paper
  • Weight — heavier paper adds to the total weight of the packaging and transport costs
  • Use — lighter paper suits wrapping, heavier paper suits sturdy packaging and board layers

How to choose the right grammage

Grammage is chosen according to the weight of the load, the packaging design and the board layer the paper will be used in. Paper that is too heavy adds cost; paper that is too light may not protect the load.

ARKA MMC’s paper machine covers 100–450 g/m² — a wide choice from light packaging to sturdy industrial board. Tell us what you need and we will choose the grammage together.
